hey nathan, (southpaugh@hotmail.com)

it was great to meet you on the street yesterday, sorry i couldn't donate, there are those who donate and those who act, you understand.

The offer you have given me of setting up a website is amazing- i have searched long and hard and even mates have turned me- no time, no interest, whatever the case may be. I'Ve met so many yanks in ireland who are doing more than the irish themselves to make the world a better place. It always amazes me.

From June 05 til june 06 i spent a year travelling and volunteering in both India and Nepal. I worked for several months with severely handicapped children in mother teresa's missionaries of charity in Kolkata (Calcutta) as well as teaching street kids English. I also taught English to Nepali, Mongolian and Tibetan monks in Dharamsala, North India- home to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government in exile. I had travelled far before but nothing or nobody could have told me what to expect from the dying, homeless and seriously diseased in India. An eye-opener is putting it mildly.

I met a man named Dhurba in Nagarkot, Nepal, who told me of his dream to build an orphanage and to look after children as he gets older. A conversation that i thought nothing of at the time- it has further developed now into my life's work- i have commmitted myself to raising money to build the orphanage- it's called Nagarhope. In september of this year- i walked 500 miles from Dublin to Galway all around the south coast- half a lap as i call it. I've raised close to ten grand in doing so- but more importantly raised awareness about the orphanage and the work i intend to do.

The work itself involves initially raising ¢æ30,000 over a year (by August 07) which should be enough to build a modest structure in Nagarkot for about ten kids. They will all be educated of course and we hope to have two little workshop rooms in the orphanage- woodwork and sewing machines to further their skills. Job prospects in Nepal at present are very scarce, even with the best education money can buy. I am still considering working with one of the bigger organisations e.g. gorta/goal to get the project off the ground, but at present, i am learning the hard way- something i actually want to do. There's no point building an orphanage with the brains of others.

I've told you some of this, but it's good to get it in writing i suppose.

I would be very interested in the radio interview, i'll be here next monday anyway, or if another monday suits you, suits me too. I'll leave my details at the bottom for keeping in contact.

Mail me back anyway if you would like any more details.

The website itself i haven't thought about but will do so over the next few days- format, photos etc. If you want to meet up rather than mail, let me know, my heart belongs in dublin even though i dont be in there much.

Thanks once again for your valuable time Nathan,

Yours gratifyingly

Hi Doc,

Good to meet with you earlier today.
Further to our meeting a few things for your info to progress.
If you wish to set up a registered business/charity in Ireland register your business name on www.cro.ie
You will need an accountant who can then register the rest of your details with the CRO as to whether you proceed with a limited company or Partnership etc
A solicitor would be the best route or check with your accountant if he can register your charity number. You will need to fill out those forms and it will take anything from 3-6 months to receive your charity number.

Zest4Kidz would be happy to help in any way we can. I will check with my contacts in India and get back to you with their whereabouts.

Live the dream

hey stuy,

you're meeting really opened up a few doors for me, and i hope it will continue to do so. I have registered online with CRO and am awaiting a reply- any idea how long it took for you- i don't want to be bothering them needlessly?

I am aware that the next step is to send away to the revenue commissioners with the relevant information- i suppose i am still confused as to what form my charity will take and what exactly it will be governed by- whether it be a memorandum of association or a constitution etc. Any advice on that? I have a solicitor friend who is reading through a sample constitution and looking over the legalitles involved. I know he will come back to me with several questions.

I was hoping that maybe you could help me out. I have been given a copy of a constitution of a pipe-band which highlights the various intents of the organisation but i am searching now for a few more constitutions from various charities (smaller ones like your own) so that he can have a better idea of what we are getting in to. I was wondering if you could possibly send me a copy of your constitution/ memorandum with details on why it has worked for you. I would also be deeply indebted if you could pass on the email address of the solicitor who helped you out- just for advise at this stage. The fundraising has been somewhat on hold whilst i have been trying to get my head around the wonderful world of irish legalities and numerous forms that need be filled in. But i have a few events coming up in December that will keep the momentum going.

I have looked into flights back to Nepal- i plan to go for six weeks next March/ April and i will travel the country looking at other orphanages - taking what i can from each one. I would also be attempting to secure land to build on- though when the building actually starts is anyones guess.

On the street yesterday i met an American called Nathan who has offered his services to make a website for me- he was canvassing for concern in Dublin. It was funny really- i told him i was still looking for a website designer. he said you've found one. I repeated that, no, i am still looking for one. And he said, sorry, was i too suttle. It's funny how a conversation can change everything- just like the talk i had with you. I am still learning, and will go on learning til the day i die.

Thanks again for showing an interest Stuy0-its hard to get a meeting with most people but you found space in your hectic schedule to accomodate me.

Looking forward to a reply, have a great day

Yours hopingly

Hey Doc,

It takes only a few days for CRO registration.
I truly think you are getting caught up in things you dont need to. You do not need to worry about the legal or technical aspects of setting up a charity. That is what your accountant is for. The same with legal aspects, your solicitor will cover that. You have the vision and they have the expertise in setting these things up, if they dont then find another accountant or solicitor who does. My solicitor is Sean O'Ceallaigh and Co in phibsboro and Cormac O'Ceallaigh is my man.

Best of luck with everything and my advice would be let the vision and dream take effect and let others help you out with the rest.
